Our main characters, sans the males, the reason you'd watch this... |
This is going to be a rather short review. This is a pretty simple and straightforward anime to review. So without further ado, I present High School DxD.
Our main hero, in all his monkey like glory. |
But all I want is a hug! |
It all begins with our less than heroic lead, Issei Hyodo, and his two perverted friends discussing their reasons for attending this particular high school. It was once girls only, but recently became coed. The male to female ration is very favorable for the male population of the school.
However this is their second year, and so far they have only struck out. Of course this could be due to the fact that they are considered creepy perverts who spend their time idly fantasizing. Even Issei's parents have lost faith in him and merely accept his perversion.
That is how life goes until one day when out of the blue Issei is asked out by the very cute Yuuma Amano. He has scored his first date!
Wings. I got them. |
Yep. As night falls she reveals that instead of begin a normal girl, she is in fact a Fallen Angel.
Issei's life drains away until he is saved by Rias Grimory, a beautiful girl from his school. You see she is a devil, and she resurrects Issei as a lesser devil under her. Considering how beautiful she is, he does not care. This is a great opportunity! If he can gain power as a devil he can have his very own harem!
Unfortunately for Issei he has a long road ahead, and many souls to acquire.
The things a devil has to do to get a soul... |
Rias Grimory, giving away the plot. |
Her back, how does it connect to her hips? |
The series is listed as TV MA, so really it's on the label. Either gratuitous nudity or violence will be involved, or both.
And yet, despite or because of that, I was never really bored. It was funny enough and I can admit to enjoying the more prurient interests. High School DxD was exactly as the label said.
"An action explosion of hot deadly ladies, PUNCTUATED WITH BOOBS."
- Bamboo Dong, Anime News Network (quoted from the BD cover slip).
And yet, I've still watched things that are far worse. This never lets you down, never sells you anything you were not on board for.
However it also never really breaks out of its shell. It does not explore any deep avenues or issues. This is simply pure entertainment.
And I accept that.
Therefore I rate High School DxD right in the middle of the pack, not great, not terrible. It is simply what it is, and for some that could be a fault and for other that could be perfect.
2.5 Stars |
A very honest assessment of the series. |
