Spectre [Movie Review]

A few days ago I saw the newest Bond movie.
I have a few opinions on it.

Hello hot stuff... and I'm really talking about the Jag CX75.
It's a freakin' DB5! A DB5!
This movie was one thing to me.

This movie was car porn.

3.5 out of 5 stars
Let me explain my history with James Bond. It's weird.

Aston Martin DB10!
I saw every single Pierce Brosnan Bond film in theaters. However until very very recently I had never seen a single other Bond film. Not a damn one of them. None. I recently watched every Bond film in order from start to finish. All of em. Including the Daniel Craig ones. Bond to me had always been Pierce Brosnan... he had the look and the attitude I associated with Bond. The other Bond's were okay. Yeah, that might come off somewhat heretical... I mean, are you not supposed to put Sean Connery on a Bond styled Pedestal? He was good, but he could not shake off what I first saw.

Just look at a little tiny bit of this parking lot!
Now one of my favorite Bond movies was Casino Royale with Daniel Craig. That was really really good. Unfortunately both Quantum of Solace and Skyfall were not nearly as good. Skyfall ruined one of my favorite Bond fan theories. However I did like the villain in Skyfall. He was crazy but fun. A little too good at what he did, but fun.

DB10 being chased by a CX75!
One thing that has carried through almost every Bond film are the cars. From the Triumph Stag in Diamonds are Forever to the Lotus Esprite Turbo to the brand new Jaguar CX75. Now there have been bad cars like the Ford Anglia... but mostly awesome cars. So let me reiterate...

This movie was car porn.

A street chase involving the Aston Martin DB10 and the Jaguar CX75? In Rome? Along the side of the Tiber?

This is not a metaphor for the movie.
It is not a chess game.
Yes, Please. Give me more.

What I did not need that was also a staple of Bond films. Explosions that occur for little to no reason at all. I know this is a thing in movies, but come on... we live in the last age of the Mythbusters and we have come to learn certain things. How some things do explode so easily when shot by a gun... to start with.

There was one explosion in this movie that really had me sit back and go 'What.'
I really did a flat statement 'What.'
It was that strange, that inexplicable. One small bullet essentially destroyed an entire facility.

It was a very strange moment one that was not eclipsed by the car / plane chase. This movie had some odd moment that really broke my suspension of disbelief.

And yet it was fun. I enjoyed the film. It was a good final movie for Daniel Craig's Bond. Oh, I've got to say how much I loved the opening shot of the film. It was one long tracking shot. Loved it.

We'll see who the next Bond is in a year or so I expect. I'm kinda hoping it will be Idris Elba. I think he could make a good Bond. We'll see.

This seems classic Bond to me.

  1. Hmm, Daniel Craig to me seems to have the look and attitude of what I would think a spy would be like. Thanks for the review! I enjoyed the "car porn" bit. A lot.
